Fly Fishing Waders - For A Comfortable Walk Into The Water

Fly fishing waders

For many anglers, fly fishing waders are a necessity. Sometimes, in order to fish efficiently, it is required to walk into the water. Avid fishers know that in order to walk in the water comfortably, a pair of waders is needed.

Waders are pants that are made of plastic, nylon, or other non-absorbent fabrics. There are also boots made for wading. These items should be warm and should not make it difficult to walk.

With this in mind, fly fishing waders can be divided into three main groups: Nylon, Neoprene, and Breathable.

Nylon Waders

Nylon waders are a step ahead of the rubber waders that were the first types of waders used. The advantages of nylon waders is that they are light weight and cheaper than other waders.

However, nylon waders also have a list of disadvantages. They are not breathable. On hot days, this can make fishermen very light headed.

While they are great at keeping water from coming in, they also do not let water out. This means that perspiration does not exit the waders. If it is cold, then the fisherman will get extremely cold once wet.

The durability of nylon waders is questionable. Of course, it always depends on the construction of any brand of waders. However, it is very easy for nylon to rip and tear.

Nylon waders are a good choice for beginners or those who rarely go fishing, but need waders those few times when they do go fishing.

Neoprene Waders

Neoprene waders tend to be known as the "middle class" of waders. These waders are great because they can handle some of the coldest weather conditions. They are available in different thicknesses, so the thinner ones can be used during the summer and the thicker ones can be used during the winter.

Neoprene waders, just like nylon waders, are not breathable. This causes the problem of fishers getting hot and lightheaded. Also, rocks and other sharp objects can easily puncture and tear neoprene waders, so it is important to watch the area of fishing to not get hit by these things.

Neoprene waders are made to fit snugly to the body. This means that wearing clothes under the waders may not be an option. Some people may not find the waders comfortable and want to wear clothes under them.

The prices for neoprene waders are still not too high. These are a good choice of waders for either beginners or experts.

Breathable Waders

Breathable fly fishing waders are made of materials that keep water out of them and also allow perspiration to escape from of them. The best known material for this is Gore-Tex. Breathable waders are usually covered with a tear resistant and snag resistant covering. These are the only waders for serious and expert fishers.

Waders can be ordered online at RiverBum.com

Styles of Waders

All three types of waders come in different styles.

  • Hip waders cover from the feet up to the hips.

  • Boot foot waders have boots on the ends of the legs and go up to the chest.

  • Stocking foot waders are just like boot foot waders, but they do not have the boot. Instead, it is like they have neoprene socks attached. It is important to know which type of wader is wanted.
Hip waders are designed for shallow water conditions. The other fly fishing waders are designed for deeper water conditions as fishers can stand in water that goes all the way up to the chest. For waders without attached boots, wading boots are sold.
