Salmon Species - A Great Selection To Choose From

There are a wide and wonderful variety of salmon species. They are probably one of the most important species of fish on this planet. Millions of salmon are fished from our lakes, rivers, oceans, streams, estuaries for recreational and commercial use every year, including a large farming industry where science now plays a very important part in the breeding of this species.

The selection to choose from is immense, here are but a few of the many.

Chinook

Chinook is one of the larger salmon species, who has other names to identify them those being, chubs, tyes, springs and black mouths. It is probably one of the main species that is the least abundant of all the species. But this type of salmon is found as far west as Russia and as far east as Japan, even from California to Alaska.

Pink Salmon

Pink salmon or another name they are known by is humpback because of the pinkish appearance, this particular species probably has one of the largest populations. Their natural range, which is a strict two year life cycle which simply means that odd and even year populations will not interbreed, because of this they only return to their breeding grounds not every year but every other year.

Steelhead

One particular salmon that is commonly known as trout is the Steelhead salmon. This salmon is native to the Pacific region, the name most commonly used by people is rainbow trout, this being their common name to most people, instead of their full name which is Land locked steelheads.

Coho

Coho, or because of their color, are also known as silver salmon. These are found in the northern pacific waters. They are unusual to the rest of the other salmon because when they spawn, they seem to grow darker and spotted to almost becoming black.

The coho salmon species can be found in the waters around British Columbia and Alaska in their greater numbers. It is a well known fact by any fisherman that upon reaching freshwater they become very difficult to catch because they become rather shy for reasons as yet unknown.

Keta

Keta salmon or probably better known name is chum they are green in color with a silvery glow to them. When spawning, the keta seems to turn a yellowish color, and this particular salmon can be found as far north as Canada or as far south as California.

Another name given to this that some people might recognize is the dog's salmon.

Cherry

Of all the pacific salmon, the one with the smallest range is the Cherry, this one is found only in the waters around Korea, Japan, and eastern Russia and sometimes in landlocked rivers, lakes, etc.

Huchen

Here is an interesting one: this is the Huchen (Danube). This particular salmon never leaves freshwater which makes them nonetheless important.

There is even one called the Australian salmon, but unlike their name suggests, it is not even a member of the salmon species and are actually fully paid up members of the perch family.

Fishlogix is computer software that identifies the best times, places, lures and techniques to catch over 25 species of fish, including salmon.

Fishing being the largest participating sport in the world, it is perhaps salmon fishing that holds the focus of many, whether on the many seas or oceans and in quieter locations such as lakes and rivers, this particular sport or pastime is available to all fisherman or women in the world.
