Trout Species - A Great Fish To Catch

Rainbow trout having a meal

There are several trout species and it’s good to know the difference when you go fishing. This article tells you more.

Trout are very similar to salmon. In fact, they are a sub species of Salmon. They prefer cold well oxygenated water and are typically found in mountainous regions because of the cooler climates.

Trout are very sensitive to the environment. They do well in clean unpolluted waters. At one time they were very scarce due to polluted waters but are now quite abundant in most parts of the world.

Here is a guide to the different trout species.

Brown Trout

Brown trout usually have a brownish/yellow body with mixture of reddish/orange spots. They are typically a bright yellow or gold color on their belly. The Brown Trout's tail fin is square with little or no spots on it.

They are native to Europe and Asia although they have been introduced to every Continent but Antarctica. Brown Trout prefers to be in cold waters although they are able to tolerate slightly higher water temperature unlike many other trout species.

You will mostly find Brown trout in upland waters and lakes.

They require well oxygenated waters. They are most often found in mountainous streams.

Wild Brown Trout are the most difficult to catch as they are definitely fighter fish.

You can best catch them in well hidden areas. They like to keep near submerged rocks, undercut banks and dense vegetation. They feed on insects close to the surface, which is why fly fishing is perfect for anglers attempting to catch these fish.

Nowadays, there is even computer software available that identifies the best times, places, lures and techniques to catch over 25 species of fish, including trout.

Sea Trout

A Sea Trout is simply a Brown Trout that is anadromus. They spend the majority of their life at sea. The Sea Trout only comes back into fresh waters for spawning.

This trout can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and coastal rivers and streams.

Anglers on the Atlantic know the best way to catch this trout is with wet flies at night.

And finally, on this list of trout species...

Rainbow Trout

There are several varieties of Rainbow Trout. Typically a Rainbow trout is silvery or dark green in color on their backs. Their sides are light colored with dark spots. Rainbow trout have a distinctive pink or reddish colored strip that runs along either side.

The Rainbow trout is native to rivers and streams along the Pacific Ocean.

Most commonly found in the Northern regions. Rainbow trout are much like their Atlantic counterparts as they too can tolerate warmer waters, though they prefer cooler temperatures.

Rainbow fish are also known for their fighting nature when they are caught.

They leap and fight when they have been angled. DNA has shown that the Rainbow Trout is a closer match to a Pacific Salmon than it is to the Brown Trout.

Trout is an anglers’ fish.

They are a great catch for a sportsman and their capture is best left to fly fishing. Their fighting spirit makes them a fun catch. They are also a great fish for eating. They thrive in clean unpolluted cold waters and this makes them a health fish to eat too.
